  • Hole Drilling - Furniture

I want to drill holes in the back panels of my bookshelves through which to pass electrical cords.  Please share info on which bit or borer to use and how to do this without splitting the wood. I am totally NOT a woodworker. Thank you for your advice.

If the back panels are real wood you can use what is called " Paddle Bits, or what is called a Hole Saw ", with either one don't try and force it only use slight pressure. If the panels are card board check and see if there are perforations that you can just push out if not, just use a good ( big) pair of scissors or a utility knife.

ron45 - Thanks for such a quick reply. I'll have to buy the bit before I start the project, but you have steered me in the right direction. Again, thanks.

You can "clean up" the hole with one of these: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=51&site=ROCKLER
