  • HELP - Knock-down texture diaster

Recently I have applied knock down texture over painted walls in a bedroom.  I painted the room without priming the walls after the texture dried.  Now my paint is flaking off.  What can I do????

I'm thinking that about the best thing you can do is to wait for the paint to stop peeling, and then maybe beg, borrow or steal an electric or gas powered leaf blower and try to remove any remaining paint to get as much of it off as you can.

Why the paint didn't stick to the texture is the $64,000 question, but I suspect that the most likely cause is that the texture wasn't fully dry.  It may have felt dry to the touch, but texture is fairly thick, so it may have been dry on it's surface, but still wet under the surface.

Then just go over everything with primer.  The primer you put over paint won't do any harm; it'll just plug up any remaining porosity there is in the surface of the painted texture.

Can you tell us how long you waited for the texture to dry before painting it?  Also, any additional information you can provide about the texture and paint you used might help us figure out why the paint didn't stick.

If the texture your talking about is popcorn or similar, and came in a bag that you mix with water.

You will get better results by spraying the paint on rather than rolling/brushing it on. The wetness from the paint loosens the texture and rolling over it more then once, the roller sleeve will pick the texture off the wall. It is important not to get it too wet. Popcorn and similar are designed to be easily removed just by lightly scraping it.

If the paint on the wall that you textured over was Behr paint. For some reason other paints will not adhere to Behr paint and can be easilly scraped off with the finger nail. Also, Behr paint has a tendacy to streak or leave edge marks and can be noticed in different lighting.
