  • Toilet and Shower Stains won't come out

We moved into a very nice house that's about 10 years old.  The previous owners pretty much kept the house and property up nicely.  Except for two things.

    1.  All of the toilets have some kind of stain in the bowl that I can't get out and I've tried lots of products made specifically for this.  Nothing works and it really bugs me.

    2. In one bath, the fiberglass shower and glass door, I have the same problem.  Just cannot get them clean.

    Anyone here have any suggestions?

Can you describe the stain.?  or take and post a picture.?

For the toilets:  The best I can describe the stain is it looks like rust.  We have 3 baths and the stains are only in two of the 3 toilets so I know it's not rust.  I'm beginning to wonder if the previous owners used a harsh chemical on it that messed it up.

For the shower:  This problem is only in one of the 3 showers.  The door is glass and always looks cloudy.  I've tried everything on it.  The fiberglass shower just looks like it has a film on it and very hard to clean.

Have you tried wet dry sandpaper in the toilet. Its worked on every stain I've ever tried in a toilet.(wear gloves). Use 100 grit. For the shower don't use sandpaper on the fiberglass. If you've tried everything and can't get it out you might want to look into having someone come out and resurface it for you. But it does get pricy, probably $400-$450 for a shower-tub combo. But it will look as good as new.

You may want to test your water... You can purchase a small pool test kit at WalMart the directions will be with the kit.

There's products on the market that will help you get it clean, just don't use anything abrasive because it will dull/destroy  the finish. If the problem is with the water the stains will keep coming back.

Do you have any water filters, and if so what kind and how big.?  Do the filters filter all water outlets or just some.?

I have information about the stains I just have to find it.

Wouldn't sandpaper take the finish off?  Resurface is not an option for me because of the expense.  I might as well just replace the toilets.  But thanks anyway.

We had our water tested a couple years ago with good results.  I don't think it's the water because there is one toilet that does not have the problem.

You said that you've already tried everything you can to make the stain go away, does that include you using a sandpaper to take them off?

If anything doesn't work on stain, replace them one by one.

I had similar stains in a toilet and used a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar - three parts soda to one part vinegar. I turned the water off to the toilet and applied a paste to the stains. I let it sit for a couple hours. Most of the stains came off except one area. I used a sponge soaked in vinegar and put some baking soda on it & kind of plastered it to the stain & left it overnight. Worked great!

I too have a similar problem with the toilet bowl having rust stains. The stains seems to be caused due to some harsh chemicals used. The baking soda and vinegar seems ti be a good solution. Definitely worth a try,

    Rust looking stains...

If you have had your water tested and it's fine ( not high in iron) That reddish stain maybe blood.

This usually happens when a harsh chemical was used and the finish has been compromised.

Using hydrogen peroxide may be your answer.
