Has anyone ever used one of the paints available to paint a bathtub?  I am painting a harvest gold cast iron one from the 70's and was looking for guidance.  What sort of prep work is best and what should I avoid.  I would be greatful for any help.

You need to be really sure of what paint you are using for a bathtub. As the paint will continuously get wet, it needs to be the one meant for bath. Also you have mentioned it is a gold cast iron one, so rusting can be a problem if the paint is not selected correctly. It would be great if you could post a picture so anyone having an idea about it, would be able to help you better.

Use only nonabrasive products to clean your painted bathtub enclosure. Avoid gouging or scraping the painted surface.

My suggestion is look under shower and tub refinishing in the phone book. I've used these guys on about half a dozen jobs and my customers were all satisfied. They are professionals and have the right equipment and materials to do the job. They're a little pricy but well worth the investment.
